Sweat Away the Negative

New year resolutions usually include something like healthier diets, increased exercise and eating out less. Everyone has their own methods to try and achieve these resolutions, whether it be partaking in the next popular diet or purchasing a gym membership.

My resolution was to find an exercising routine that would help me stay fit and feel better. When we exercise, our body releases endorphins, which makes us happy – Elle Woods taught us that. However, I think out of all of the exercising routines, hot yoga does this the most.

I’m the kind of person that walks into the gym and just groans. Once I’m on the elliptical and pedaling away, I’m fine, but it’s the getting there that is difficult.

It’s not the same with hot yoga.

I walk into the room and just lay there and relax. The holds and the poses during the classes are grueling and the way that hot yoga works your body is much more extensive than you may think. Everyone in the class is constantly sweating, but the point is you’re not only exercising and building muscle; you’re sweating out the stress from last week, the test that you’re about to study for and the roommate drama that’s been going on for months.

This work out cleanses the body and the soul. Every time I leave my hot yoga class, I feel happier, relaxed and relieved. I’ve began to focus on exactly how I feel after leaving the class and there is a sense of clarity that makes me feel like my best self. I now try and channel that feeling all the time.

I don’t think that every single person needs to start attending hot yoga classes in order to feel this way, but if we approach life with a positive mindset, then the more that we do will be positive too. Think positively, live positively, breathe positively and you will realize that your life and the people around you are more special than you ever thought before.

Happiness and Health

It seems as though everything we do to our bodies these days is all in an attempt to attain what society has deemed as “perfection.” The average person goes through so much to keep up his or her appearance. From tanning to purchasing clothes, we do it all in order to achieve what we believe is beautiful. We all know the infamous Jersey Shore routine “Gym, Tan, Laundry,” the first component of that equation being gym. You can’t feel good if you don’t look good right?

For many people this is extremely true, when they look beautiful they feel beautiful. So, what better way to accomplish this goal than to stay in shape. What seems to be forgotten though is the idea of exercising for health, not to achieve the “perfect” body. Perfection and beauty both begin within and as a result shine outward. No matter how hard you work to get that perfect body, you will never truly be happy until you love yourself for who you are, flaws and all.

We should stop looking to fast, Hollywood fad diets to help us feel better about ourselves. That confidence should be achieved from simply loving ourself. Exercising and eating healthy should be part of our daily routine in order to stay healthy. Some people choose to stay overweight because they feel as though they are not conforming to the stereotypes of beauty and perfection. These people are only hurting themselves. Being healthy should not be a statement, but rather something we should all do in order to extend our lives and have the ability to live life to the fullest. So for me, healthiness does bring happiness because it allows me to reach my full potential in life.

Looking to the Future

During a time where many are celebrating and basking in the holiday season, many others are waiting to hear back from colleges and jobs. It is a stressful time when your future is no longer in your hands and you have to simply sit there and wait. However, something that we must all understand is that just because we don’t get accepted or offered a certain opportunity, that does not mean that we are inadequate or deficient in any way.

If something does not work out, that simply means that the fit was not right. It was not meant to be. Opportunities come and go, but what we make of the results of those decisions is what shapes our character. One might not get a job at a company, but if they go out and start searching for internships or more experiences, then it shows determination and perseverance.

People are perfect the way they are. If others can’t see that, it is their loss. A person should not change to fit a mold they cannot fit. They should grow and learn from their experiences, or lack there of, and appreciate anything that comes their way.

Life has a funny way of somehow working out, so take advantage of the opportunities around you, and maybe you’ll be able to make the impossible, possible and prove to others the perfection in you that they did not see before.

The Season of Giving and Receiving

Everyone knows that this time of year is the season of giving. Giving gifts to others and lending a hand to those that are in need. What’s not publicized during this time is the honest truth everyone knows and feels. The excitement during the season is prevalent because it is the time of year we not only give but we also receive from others. And who doesn’t like getting 8 presents for Hanukkah or waking up to a tree filled with presents underneath it? But when the season rolls around and we are not as fortunate as others to give and receive gifts or even spend the holidays with loved ones you can always feel the holiday cheer no matter who you are with or what your doing. This time of year we need to be reminded of what this season is really about. To help us feel the real holiday spirit of giving and receiving we should all:

Give a hug to receive warmth,

Share laughter to receive a smile,

Lend a hand to receive happiness and

Give love to receive joy

Spend this time of year really thinking what is important to you and enjoying the present. Always remember this quote by Bil Keane, “Yesterday’s the past, tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” I hope everyone has an amazing holiday season and that the end of 2011 is filled with love and joy for you and your family.

Turn Your Fear Into Excitement

Fear is a feeling everyone experiences almost every day. People allow fear to get in their way from pursuing their dreams. It prohibits people from experiencing life when really it should do quite the opposite. Fear is a way to realize opportunity. When I feel scared I know it must mean something, it must mean that I want the end result of whatever fearful action that is. Eleanor Roosevelt said to “do one thing everyday that scares you,” this is a challenge I am setting for myself from today on and I want you to begin this challenge with me. Doing one thing a day that scares you will:

increase your level of confidence
help you discover new opportunities
increase your perception of yourself in a positive light
give you something to feel proud about that you accomplished each day
and decrease your barriers and limits you have set for yourself

Take this challenge with me and share your daily fears with us commenting how you overcame then. If you think back to a regret you have in life you will realize that fear is the pure reason that regret exists. Always remember the only limits that exist in life, are the ones you set for yourself.

Don’t let fear get in the way of accomplishing your dreams. Turn that fear into excitement and take that excitement and conquer the world with it.

Love More than the Skin You’re In

I’ve made a rather obvious observation recently: People wear too much makeup. I’m not referring to people in their 20s, although there are some people who really do wear too much makeup. I’m referring to the pre-teens and the newly turned teenagers.

I have a younger sister who is only 12-years-old, and thankfully she does not have makeup caked onto her face, but I’ve recently seen a bunch of girls her age who put on more makeup than I do.

I remember when my friends and I were that age, we would play around with different eye shadows and blush, but we wouldn’t apply mascara and foundation like our life depended on it.

There was this little girl that I saw at the mall the other day. She had blue eye shadow and thought she was Hannah Montana. Now, there are three issues with this: 1. This is not the 1980s, so blue eye shadow is not okay, 2. There was already a Hannah Montana and she did not turn out too well, 3. She was about 10-years-old and she looked unbelievably trashy.

What is with the youth today? Why do they want to grow up so quickly? They are already blessed with a natural beauty that people that are ten to 20 years older than them would kill for.

If you’ve seen any of the recent Bare Escentuals commercials, they are focusing on the beauty within. They show a group of models that they picked based on their accomplishments and what they someday hope to achieve. In their eyes, that is what is beautiful, and they picked these models before ever seeing their faces.

I think what they are trying to get us to realize is that in a world where it is so easy to change your outer appearance, whether it be by plastic surgery or applying a load of makeup, whatever your age is, the most beautiful part about you is your true self – your actions, your dreams and the way you carry yourself every day.

Audrey Hepburn once said, “True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It’s the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that shows and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.”

Now if Audrey Hepburn believes this, a woman who is so elegant and classically beautiful, then who am I to argue with her? Love the skin that you are in and focus on your soul, because that will make you more beautiful than any amounts of makeup.

i’mperfect

The word imperfect was created by combining the two words, i’m perfect. This is evidence showing that there really is no such thing as imperfect, defining it as we do now. Perfect exists, it’s in the dictionary, it’s used in the media and it is used in everyday conversation. The reason we look to the word perfect as being ‘evil’ is because of society, because of us. We can’t blame our view of perfection on anyone but ourselves. In the dictionary it defines perfection as;

1. The condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all flaws or defects.

2. A person or thing perceived as the embodiment of such a condition, state, or quality.

In the first definition it states “being free or AS FREE AS POSSIBLE from all flaws”. You were born perfect. Every single person just the way they are is what the definition is referring to. We are all as free as we possibly can be from flaws. We ALL have flaws but that is what makes us unique individuals. Some people turn to plastic surgery or eating disorders in order to have less flaws and become one step closer to perfection but the truth is you have already attained perfection. When you are trying to become someone your not you will never be happy. No matter how much you change about yourself if you are changing it for someone else or to look like someone else then you will never be able to feel perfect.

Now referring to the second definition of perfection… it gives us the power to perceive a person in ANY condition, state, or quality we want to! The media portrays perfection to make it seem unattainable by telling us we need this product to look perfect or this type of body to be considered perfect but in reality that is just the way they are perceiving it to sell their brand! Every single person has the ability to perceive perfection as themselves because you really ARE PERFECT!

Finding who you are and figuring out how to love yourself is how you will attain perfection. The challenge in life is not to become perfect, it’s accepting that you already are. It took me 20 years to find my perfection inside of me and since then my entire life has changed. By loving myself and realizing my own perfection my confidence sky rocketed and it has enabled me to chase after my dreams, knowing that I am capable of accomplishing anything!

Don’t be afraid of the word perfect. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Don’t be afraid to love yourself. Don’t be afraid to have confidence. Don’t be afraid to chase after your dreams. Don’t be afraid to believe you are perfect.

Once you have overcome all of these fears you will notice a change in your outlook on life. You will also notice a change in how people respond to you, your increase in success in your job or at school and a change in your level of happiness. Always remember that you can have everything you want in life and the only thing stopping you is you. You are already perfect, so what’s stopping you from feeling that way too?
